1. What is the Rotary International License Plate?
The Rotary special interest license plate is an official license plate issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles for vehicles registered in California. Proceeds from the sale of these plates will benefit educational and community outreach activities supported by Rotary International. The plate contains the words “Service Above Self” and the emblem of Rotary International.

2. How do I order a Rotary License Plate?
See Easy Instructions. Download, complete, and send the attached application and a check payable to Rotary International (address is on this application).

3. How much does the Rotary License Plate Cost?
$75 over the usual registration fee, with a $40 annual renewal fee. Fees are almost entirely tax-deductible!

4. Can I keep my current license plate number?
Unfortunately you won't be able to keep your old plate; DMV rules don't allow it. Your new license plate will have a number taken from the special series of numbers reserved for the Rotary License Plates. Commercial plates are also available.

5. Can I personalize my Rotary License Plate?
Yes, when you order your plate, you can apply for a personalized plate. You may use a combination that is no more than six characters, and does not already exist on any other California license plate. A new personalized plate will cost $115, with a $65 renewal fee.

Click on this link to go to the DMV search. Use the back button to return. Or call any DMV office or go in person to the DMV and check the current listing. 7. How much money will go to community service?
After the DMV costs of producing the plates are met, the Remainder will be allocated as follows: For serial configured plates, all the money goes to Rotary International. For personalized configuration, a portion of the monies goes to the Environmental License Plate Fund and the major portion goes to Rotary International's funding of educational, international outreach and humanitarian purposes of community service.

8. Can I give the Rotary License Plate as a gift?

11. Where does the money go?
The money goes into an account to be distributed to Rotary International clubs/districts in California for the purpose of promoting more community service.

12. What will happen with the money?
The money will be distributed to the Rotary International clubs in California to further community activities by these clubs. Final guidelines for this account are now being discussed with Rotary International, as well as, Rotarians throughout California to make this distribution fair and legal.

13. How much money will Rotary receive?
With the submission of the first 7500 applications, Rotary will receive about $300,000. As more applications are submitted, the amount of money Rotary will get, will increase. The continuous dollars Rotary will receive from that point forward will be refunded back to RotaryÕs account on an ongoing basis, as long as the Rotary License Plates are purchased and/or renewed.

14. For how many years will they receive these dollars?
As long as Rotarians continue to support this project by buying and/or renewing their Rotary License Plates, Rotary will continue to receive the appropriate dollar amount to further community service here in California, based on the number of plates that are sold and/or renewed each year.

15. Who does all the work after we turn in our 7500?
When the individuals of California turn in the first 7500 applications for the Rotary License Plates (RLPÕs), this proves to the state, that there are enough individuals in California who support this plate, and will continue to promote it. Therefore, they will start to make our RLPÕs. At that time, the DMV takes over the administrative activities for issuing our RLP. Our Rotary License Plates (RLP) will be advertised and sold on the DMV Environmental License Plate site. However, it is a Rotary project to keep these dollars coming in. The more Rotary license plates that are sold each year translates into how much money will be deposited in the California Rotary account.

16. What does Rotary have to do to continue to receive these yearly checks?
Since Rotary will be receiving more public exposure with our new RLPÕs, it is RotaryÕs responsibility to keep the education growing that these plates are available, and that part of the proceeds are used to further community service in California.

17. Why should anyone in MY club buy a plate?
Each district/club that has participated in Rotary submitting the first 7500 applications, will receive a check periodically to do further community service projects in their CLUBS. Every year the decision can be made as to how these dollars will be spent: The Foundation, an existing project, a new project, an Endowment acct, etc.

18. When will our checks be cashed?
The checks are now being deposited as we receive them into our RLP account. As the number of applications submitted grows, the numbers will be posted on our RLP website. Our goal is to have the total 7500 applications submitted as quickly as possible.

19. If I already have a personalized license plate, can I convert it to a RLP?
The answer is yes, IF the message is 2-6 letters/numbers.

20. If my district does not submit any applications, will we still receive some of the dollars given back to Rotary?
The answer is NO. That is why our website is designed the way it is. We want to see WHERE the applications come from.

This is a HUGE project, which requires participation from ALL clubs. The continuous dollars that the Rotary International clubs in California will receive are well worth the effort.
